Read Across America at Santee Elementary

This week is National  Read Across America, the birthday of Dr. Seuss (March 2nd). An initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. This awareness day calls all children and youth in every community across the United States to celebrate reading. It encourages them to read where ever they are. Today your  Shop With a Cop /Badges for Education was honored to be a part of this great event. We volunteered to read books to students and donated prizes to our adopted school “Santee Elementary”.These kids love to read and are on the path to great things!

Originally from San Jose Spotlight Darrell Cortez retired more than a decade ago from the San Jose Police Department, so he isn’t fighting crime in the streets anymore. But he is working on preventing crime before it starts — by investing in children’s education. Since 2007, Cortez and his wife, Alicia, have operated the Shop with a Cop Foundation, which supports language arts-based education in six San Jose schools. Annual Shop With a Cop Silicon Valley, the San Jose Police Department, and Target hosted a Heroes and Helpers Holiday Shopping Spree to help 220+ students from Los Arboles,  K. Smith, Gardner Academy, Clyde Arbuckle McKinley and Santee purchase holiday gifts for their families.
